Ragwort and the Advertising Standards Authority

E-mail Print PDF
Swansea FoE has been working for some time on the issue of Ragwort and the panic and hysteria surrounding it. Ragwort is an important plant for biodiversity but it has been subject to a campaign of misinformation often promoted with those who appear to have something to gain from it being vilified.

This is then taken up by others who just believe what it said. Some vested interests are more important than others and  some firms may well have innocently repeated what they believed to be true.

Nevertheless we identified a number of on-line sites where there were people selling ragwort related products and a leaflet produced by the British Horse Society  jointly with a local council, and complained to the Advertising Standards Authority. Each of the pages below documents a case where material had to be removed from the internet.

Monsanto UK

The British Horse Society and Warwickshire Council's ragwort leaflet

Ragfork – A site selling a tool used to remove ragwort

There were also several companies selling these products which were repeating the company line. The total number of organisations comes to over a dozen.
