The company behind the controversial Cwmrhydyceirw Quarry waste tip has been given two weeks to solve problems with its plans to resume dumping waste. The Environment Agency has warned the bosses of Italian based S I Green UK Limited that their application to reopen the waste dump is likely to be rejected.
Waste is leaking out of the quarry through a faulty plastic liner, which was put in some years ago. Now a new liner is needed so the existing waste has to be removed. There is difficulty fixing the liner over the northern side of the quarry.
The waste itself will be used to hold the liner in place and the Agency are unhappy that this can be achieved safely. Mr. Roy Jones Chairman of Swansea Friends of the Earth said, " It seems that the Agency thinks the company's design calculations are faulty. We will be monitoring the situation carefully."
