David Bellamy cherry picking data

This article exposes another aspect of the poor science of David Bellamy who has become well known as a climate change denier. One of his claims is that it actually hasn't got warmer in the  ten years since 1998. This seems to demonstrate a fundamental lack of understanding of the science.

There are factors which cause variations in the global temperature from year to year. These have been studied.

One of them is called “El Nino” which is Spanish for The Boy (and by extension the Christ child) and comes from changes in the weather that can occur in the waters of the pacific off South America which originally observed around Christmas time.

The year 1998 was exceptionally warm because of a strong El Nino event. This phenomenon being part of the natural variation of the earth's climate.

There is also a phenomenon called “La Nina” ( the girl) which is named for being the opposite condition to El nino and 2008 was colder because of this.

This kind of variability from year to year is expected and normal and Bellamy by picking a specific warm year to start an analysis (or a cold one to end with) is "cherry-picking". He is choosing data that fit his ideas and rejecting the data that does not. This is poor science. If you were to start start in 1997 or 1999 you will see a sharp rise in the temperature. In fact most of the years in the 21st century have been higher than any year except 1998.
