Climate Change

Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns . Most of the time when it is talked about what is being referred to is anthropogenic climate change which is caused by the activities of mankind.

At the root of the problem is a phenomenon called the Greenhouse Effect . In technical terms it refers to the change in the thermal equilibrium of the earth caused by the presence in the atmosphere of gasses that absorb infra-red radiation

This has been known about for a long time An argument for its existence was first made by Joseph Fourier in 1824. This was then strengthened and more evidence provided by Claude Pouillet in 1827 and in 1836.John Tyndal then provided more reasoning as a result of experimental observations in 1859 and it was then substantiated and and quantified in 1896 by Svante Arrhenius.

This effect makes the earth warmer than it would be. In the natural state of affairs carbon dioxide and other gasses act as a blanket which warms up the earth.

The problem is that the burning of fossil fuels is leading to an increase in the carbon dioxide creating an even stronger greenhouse effect and warming the earth.

Climate change is the greatest threat to the existence of civilisation; During his tenure as Chief Scientist to the UK government Professor Sir David King stated, "climate change is the most severe problem we are facing today - more serious even than the threat of terrorism".

In the local Swansea area Swansea Friends of the Earth has taken up a number of campaigns which relate to climate change such as Opencast Mining and waste incineration and pyrolysis . All of which are unnecessary activities which increase the release of carbon dioxide and imperil the climate.
