Climate change deniers The world hasn't warmed since 1998

There is a common claim of the climate change deniers that the world did not warm between 1998 and 2008. It is a favoured claim of David Bellamy , for example. This is not true

This claim is derived by cherry picking the data and is based on a misunderstanding of the science

There is a normal natural variation in the earth's temperature from one year to the next. This is independent of climate change. It is just natural variability. The reasons for this have been studied and one of the factors is called “El Nino” Spanish for The Boy or the Christ Child. It takes its name from changes in the weather in South America on the pacific coast that happen in some years around the time of Christmas. There is an opposite effect where the conditions are reversed and this is called “La Nina” Spanish for The Girl

There was a particularly strong and pronounced El Nino effect in 1998 and as a result it was exceptionally

On the other hand there was a La Nina event in 2008 and it was noticeably cooler as a result

By “cherry picking” the data you can make a false claim that it is not rising. Starting in 1997 or 1999 would show a noticeable rise in temperature.

Data from the UK's Meteorological Office, show that the ten warmest years in the modern weather record have all occurred since 1997. Temperatures have continued to rise when you measure the data as a whole not chose specific pieces of it that suit a denier's agenda.
